This book, along with a few others in various languages, ell a real test of the very idea of translation. Monsieur Seurel and his pupils seem to spend as much time in the countryside as they do in the classroom, and the life of that countryside is precisely situated in the Cher region of France, not far from Bourges.
It took me some time to get comfortable with Le Grand Meaulnes; a lack of meaningful dialogue between Meaulnes and the narrator initially prevented me from feeling the depth of their bond. It’s to me Schrodinger’s Cat or some other weird, quantum paradox. His notes and sketches for Colombe Blanchet have also been published.
In other words the sensibility is that of a sensitive rustic intellectual; a character type I always find intriguing. He wrote a single novel, Le Grand Meaulneswhich was adapted into two feature films and is considered a classic of French literature.

A great many writers have citied this book as a favourite, notably John Fowles, in the preface to the revised reissue of his novel The Maguswho claimed that he sought, in this justly celebrated novel about the mysterious goings-on on a Greek island, to create the same effect of enchantment achieved by Alain-Fournier.
The tragedy of the main character, though painted in pastel colours, reveals in fact a different tragedy, quiet and even more pastel, of the narrator.
The literary world is so much the poorer for his loss as well as for the loss of many more novels he surely would have w Although Le Grand Meaulnes sometimes translated as The Wanderer or The Lost Estate was written inwhich was more in the decadent or modernism era, this lovely, mysterious novel falls definitely into the category of late Romanticism. As it is, it would have been appreciated as a book in its own right, capturing as it does the idyll of quiet country life, before the adven I read this book because it is so famous, and because I was hoping to improve my French.
